This mug depicts the evolution of woman from ape through to the pinnacle of development - the fiddle (violin if you prefer) player!
It would make a brilliant gift for any female fiddling friend, or perhaps for yourself if you're a player. What could be better for drinking your morning tea from than a musical themed mug to remind you what a joy it is to be able to play music.
The theory of evolution by natural selection was first formulated in Charles Darwin's book "On the Origin of Species" in 1859 and describes the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioural traits.
Some of these characteristics may give the individual an advantage over other individuals which they can then pass on to their offspring.
As a consequence those individuals most suited to their environment survive and, given enough time, the species will gradually evolve.
Music and dancing has always been a part of courtship, from the birds singing to drunken youths in nightclubs!
It’s still very much disputed when the first device which could be considered a musical instrument was created. Part of the reason for this is that many early instruments would have been constructed from animal skins and bone, wood or other non durable materials which didn’t survive. There are some very early flutes from roughly 67 thousand years ago though – so they’re pretty old! Most instruments were probably developed from the middle ages through to the 19th century though.
Saying that, there were probably drums being banged long before that, as early as people were dancing round fires so probably closer to a million years ago!
Playing the fiddle could be considered one of these behavioural traits, and since people have been drinking out of cups / mugs for a very long time now it’s inevitable that the two should be linked together in this way.
One of these lovely quality mugs is a fabulous and funny way to share your belief that playing the fiddle is the pinnacle of a woman's evolution.
